Situated on the relatively flat terrain of the Canadian
Shield, the study site is near the northern edge of the boreal forest,
in the zone of discontinuous permafrost (see map below). Approximately
120 years old, the forest is a mosaic of upland stands and bog, with dense
10 m tall black spruce (Picea mariana) on the uplands, and
1-6 m tall stunted spruce in poorly-drained bogs. The
groundcover is primarily moss, with feather moss (Pleurozium schreberi
and Hylocomium splendens) occupying the upland areas, and sphagnum
moss in the bogs. Carbon-rich peat soils underlie the NOBS site, as
they do in large expanses of northern latitudes. The tower location is
latitude 55.87962N and longitude 98.48081W at elevation 259 m (ASL).
